Touring Prague: The Museums

Whether tourists want to take an educational trip or bring the family for an enjoyable day of learning and cultural appreciation, the museums of Prague offer something for everyone. From science museums to wax figurines, Prague’s museums can be both entertaining and educational.

Several Options to Choose From

Prague offers several different museums to choose from when planning a trip to the city. Tourists may be fascinated by the National Technical Museum, which houses old cars, motorcycles, bikes, and planes. The museum also hosts trains, cameras, watches, and clocks all within a historic 1930s building. This museum can be a fun experience for the technically-minded person or for those interested in the development of technology and its effect on the Czech Republic.

The National Museum is also the Natural Sciences Museum, which is located near Wenceslas Square. This museum is home to a variety of animals, vegetables, mineral specimens, and archeological finds. Tourists shouldn’t miss the Pantheon, with its many statures of famous Czechs to study and admire.

Musically-minded tourists can visit the Mozart Museum, or Villa Bertranka, which offers a rich experience for those who appreciate the music of this famous composer. The museum offers historic musical scores, letters, and musical instruments for tourists to browse and appreciate. The museum also hosts classical concerts, usually around 5 p.m. each day, for visitors to enjoy.

Artists will enjoy the Museum of Decorative Arts, which features Czech crystal, porcelain, and wood carvings among other pieces in a neo-Renaissance palace next to the Rudolfinum concert hall. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the Wax Museum, with over 60 wax figures of famous people in Czech history including Charles the IV, Vaclav Havel, and several communist leaders.

There are also many small art galleries and museums scattered throughout the city that the careful tourist may find and enjoy. Visitors can also check their guidebooks or consult with a guide if they are on a tour to find out any other museums or galleries that may hold interest to them. It is advisable to check out at least a few of the museums during a visit to Prague.
