Touring Prague: The Restaurants

Of course one of the most important things for tourists to do when visiting Prague and the Czech Republic is to sample some authentic Czech food. Prague is home to typical central European food with other influences including German, Austrian, Hungarian, and Polish flavors.

Typical Fare

One of the standard meals in Prague is found on just about every restaurant menu. Called “knedlo, vepro, zelo,” this dish features bread dumplings, sauerkraut, and roast pork. Prague restaurants also offer a variety of different cuisines, from the fast food chains of America to more exotic cuisine.

One of the most famous offerings of the Czech Republic is Czech beer. Beer has been brewed in the Czech Republic since the 10th century. The two best known types of beers in the Czech Republic are Pizen and Budvar, better known as Pilsner Urquell and Budwaiser, respectively. The American beer Budweiser owes its origins to the Czech version, Budwaiser. This version of beer has been brewed and perfected for hundreds of years and is said to be more tasty than its American counterpart.

There are also hundreds of restaurants and pubs serving up a variety of dishes to locals and tourists alike. Some of the best include the Intercontinental Zlata Praha, which boasts Czech international cuisine. Another favorite is the Svata Klara restaurant, which serves up French-Czech cuisine. Both of these eateries are on the top list of best restaurants in the Czech Republic.

Of course, tourists to the Czech Republic can enjoy more mundane fare such as a hamburger from McDonald’s or a pizza. However, tourists should be aware that prices at these fast-food restaurants vary and also that the ingredients in the menu items may not be the same as in their American counterparts. Hamburgers, for example, may consist of a different type of meat than those in America and may be more or less expensive. People visiting Prague should at least try one of the local cuisines as they feature some of the best ethnic food in the Czech Republic.
