Touring Prague: The Weather

Visitors interested in touring Prague should note that the climate is very similar to that of the temperate states of the United States. Prague is a city with four distinct seasons and a fairly continental climate. Summers are hot, winters are cold, and the spring and fall seasons are pretty mild but subject to change.

The Best Times to Visit

May through September is the best time to visit Prague, with June being the most highly recommended month of travel for tourists. During this time, particularly during July, August, and September, the weather is considerably nice and there are fewer tourists than in other seasons. Like many states in the United States, Prague’s climate is very hot in the summers and chilly during the winters. The average temperatures of Prague are variable depending on the month and season.

In January, the average temperature is 28 degrees Fahrenheit, with a humidity rate of 70 percent. In April, the average temperature is 54 degrees Fahrenheit, with a humidity rate of 49 percent. July is hotter, with an average temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit and a humidity rate of 51 percent. October is mild with average temperatures hovering around 54 degrees and an average humidity rate of 63 percent.

The Problem of Pollution

Prague does have the unfortunate problem of fairly significant air pollution. In mid-winter, mostly November through February, when people are burning coal to stay warm and the streets are full of traffic, the pollution causes an inversion layer of smog. This causes the air in the city to be fairly thick and foul smelling. To combat this problem, the city council has started a program of gas heating, and the air quality in Prague is slowly improving.

People who plan to visit the city during the winter months should keep this fact in mind and pack accordingly. People who are particularly sensitive to allergens and other irritating substances that could be harbored in the air should avoid visiting the city at this time. Visiting in the spring, summer, or fall would be a better decision for people wanting to enjoy cleaner, crisper city air.
